Weight training for adolescents - Weight training at an early age
can be very beneficial, as it can establish a strong base from on
which they can build in the years to come.
The
only concern I would have is with lifting very heavy - meaning anything
in the under 6 rep range. The reason for this is that when kids
are that young, their epiphyseal plates (growth plates) are not
yet closed. The open distance can determine how much a kid can grow.
I have seen studies about how certain activities (including many
sports) can cause these plates to close prematurely, thereby limiting
the growth potential for that child. But certainly some moderate
load higher volume weight training to increase strength and conditioning
would be a great idea.
